Confederate 1861- 1865
Charleston, South Carolina

Once the Charleston County Jail became so overcrowded, the enlisted Union prisoners were moved to the charleston Race Course for confinement.

During the fire of Charleston in December 1861, the Race Course was spared from any harm. At that time, guards from the Race Course went to assist the firemen.

The Race Course stayed in use until 1865.
