Unit History
- First--Organized February 26, 1862, for garrison duty in the forts of Boston Harbor, and on duty at Fort Warren until April, 1863, when assigned to 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery as Company "A."
- Second--Organized November 3, 1862, for garrison duty in the forts of Boston Harbor, and on duty at Fort Warren until April, 1863, when assigned to 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery as Company "B."
- Third--Organized January 10, 1863, for garrison duty in the forts of Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., March, 1864. Attached to 2nd Brigade, De Russy's Division, 22nd Corps, Dept. of Washington, to July, 1864. 3rd Brigade, DeRussy's Division, 22nd Corps, to August. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "A" August, 1864.
- Fourth--Organized April 22, 1863. Assigned to 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery April, 1863, as Company "C."
- Fifth--Organized June 6, 1863. Assigned to 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery as Company "D" June, 1863.
- Sixth--Organized May 9, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C.. and garrison duty there until August, 1864. Attached to Third Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "B" August, 1864.
- Seventh--Organized August 14, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty in the defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "C" August, 1864.
- Eighth--Organized August 14, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty there in the defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "D" August, 1864.
- Ninth--Organized August 27, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery August, 1864, as Company "E."
- Tenth--Organized September 16, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "F" August, 1864.
- Eleventh--Organized October 20, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "G" August, 1864.
- Twelfth--Organized November 20, 1863, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Ordered to Washington, D.C., and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, May to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "H" August, 1864.
- Thirteenth--Organized February 10, 1864, for garrison of forts in Boston Harbor. Left Boston for Fortress Monroe, Va., March 7, 1864. Placed in charge of the pontoon train, Army of the James, and participated in the Campaign of Gen. Butler against Petersburg and Richmond, Va., May, 1864. Built and maintained bridges across the Appomattox, connecting Army of the Potomac and Army of the James, and the bridges acres James River used in the frequent crossings of the Federal armies during the siege of Petersburg. In the Appomattox Campaign built the pontoon bridge a Farmville by which the 2nd and 6th Corps crossed in pursuit of Lee, and built the bridge at Richmond, Va. by which all the Union Armies crossed the James Rive: on their way to Washington after close of the war. As signed to 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery as Company "I," but remained detached. Mustered out September 26, 1865.
- Fourteenth--Organized May 12, 1864. Sailed from Gallop's Island for Washington, D.C., June 23, 1864 and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, June to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery August, 1864, as Company "K."
- Fifteenth--Organized May 20, 1864. Sailed from Gallop's Island for Washington, D.C., June 23, 1864 and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until August, 1864. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Hardin's Division 22nd Army Corps, Dept. of Washington, June to August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery August 1864, as Company "L."
- Sixteenth--Organized August, 1864. Assigned to 3rd Heavy Artillery as Company "M" August, 1864. Sailed for Washington, D.C., September 22, 1864.
- Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-first, Twenty-second, Twenty-third, Twenty-fourth, Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Companies organized August, 1864, and left State for Washington, D.C., September 11 to September 16, 1864. Assigned to 4th Heavy Artillery November 12, 1864.
- Twenty-ninth--Organized September 20, 1864. Ordered to Washington October 29, 1864, and garrison duty in the Defenses of Washington, D.C., until June 1865. Attached to 1st Brigade, DeRussy's Division 22nd Army Corps. Mustered out June 16, 1865.
- Thirtieth--Organized September 1, 1864. Ordered to Washington. D.C., September 26, 1864, and garrison duty in the Defenses of that city until June, 1865. Attached to 1st Brigade, DeRussy's Division, 22nd Army Corps. Mustered out June 16, 1865.
