Organized for one year on August 8, 1861, per S.O. #290, Headquarters, Wise's brigade.
Much of the regiment was captured and paroled at Roanoke Island, North Carolina, on February 8, 1862.
Portion that avoided capture became the 26th Infantry Battalion and never rejoined the regiment.
Portion that had been captured was declared exchanged about September 1862.
Merged with the 28th Infantry Battalion as the 59th Infantry Regiment on November 1, 1862.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
