Organized in state service for one year probably during June 1861.
Transferred to Confederate service on July 1, 1861.
Much of the regiment captured at Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861.
The 1st Company G was disbanded following its capture and parole.
Many of the other companies did not reorganize until October 1862.
Regiment reorganized on May 1, 1862, with the addition of the four companies of the 9th Infantry Battalion.
The 1st Company K was transferred to the 62nd (Mounted) Infantry Regiment on September 24, 1862.
The 1st Companies E, F, H, and I were assigned to the 62nd (Mounted) Infantry Regiment, following their exchange and reorganization, per S.O. #23, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, dated January 28, 1863.
Field consolidation with the 21st, 42nd, 44th, 48th, and 50th Infantry Regiments from May 14, 1864, to April 9, 1865.
The 50th Infantry Regiment was detached from this field consolidation prior to July 9, 1864.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
