Organized with four companies on June 21, 1862, per S.O. #143, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
1st Company C detached as the United States Artillery on October 1, 1862, per S.O. #92, Headquarters, Richmond Defenses, Maryland Light Artillery assigned as 2nd Company C on November 3, 1862.
Whittington's Battery Light Artillery assigned to the battalion on December 13, 1862, as Company E and eventually designated as 3rd Company C.
2nd Company C disbanded in February 1863.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
